life_inshadowTara concentrated very hard on the tank tops and long skirts she was folding up for her summer at camp. If she did that, she wouldn't have to listen to her parents' hissed fight in the living room.
They'd agreed. She'd gotten the letter, the scholarship, out of the blue, and her mom had fought for her, and now it was time for her to go to the airport, and her dad --
"- going to take care of Don and and me the house now, Marie," he was saying. When her mother murmured some assurance everything would be okay, he came back with, "You can't. You're sick. You gonna make the men do for themselves while that girl gallivants off across the country?"
Tara started packing faster. A few more hours and she'd be free, and that was almost as terrifying as it was liberating. Some part of her felt she should stay and help her mother, but her mother had been rather firm that she was to take the scholarship and not look back. And Tara didn't argue when her mother used that tone.
Donny Maclay walked into her room and threw himself on her bed. He didn't knock, but he'd never bothered himself about that anyhow, so Tara barely moved in greeting and annoyance. "H-hi."
"Huh-hi," he mocked. "Almost ready, little sis? Ready for your trip into the big fancy world?"
Tara shrugged and went to stick a few books in with her clothes, but Donny grabbed her wrist to make her look up at him. "Better hope nobody sees who you really are."
She didn't have time to answer before her father was in the doorway, stiff. "Time to go," came the command.
Tara simply nodded as she wrenched away from Donny and closed the suitcase. "Yes sir."
Only a few more hours, and she'd be free.
